The handpan is an original musical instrument that generally leaves no one indifferent. It has become increasingly popular over the years, and many people are now keen to acquire one.

Whether it’s musicians wanting to learn a new instrument, or people who have never played a musical instrument in their lives, the handpan attracts a lot of beginners with very little musical knowledge. But that doesn’t matter, because the hang drum is intended to be a universal musical instrument, easily accessible to the ordinary person.

The best handpans for beginners

On this page you’ll find our selection of the best handpans for beginners! We’ve selected all the handpans from our shop that we recommend for beginners. More affordable in terms of price and easier to learn thanks to a limited number of notes, you’ll soon be able to play beautiful melodies with your beginner’s handpan, even if you’ve never played music before in your life.

How do you choose your handpan as a beginner?

Buying your very first handpan is always a very special event. Firstly because it’s a major investment in financial terms (buying a handpan requires a certain budget and will not be a trivial sum for most people) but also in terms of personal investment (as a beginner, you’ll be investing your time and energy in learning to play beautiful melodies with your handpan).

You’re going to feel an incredible sense of achievement and personal satisfaction once you’re able to play your first melodies on the handpan. But before you do, you’ll need to choose a design that suits you and that you can easily get to grips with.

Criteria for choosing a beginner’s handpan

The number of notes: If you’re a beginner, choose a design with few notes. A 9-note or 10-note handpan will be perfect, as it will enable you to master the whole instrument very quickly. Once you’re comfortable enough with your instrument, you can move on to a design with more notes.

The scale of the instrument: Closely related to the number of notes on the instrument, the scale represents the succession of notes offered by the instrument. The scale of a musical instrument is often characterised by its starting and ending notes.

Quelle fréquence choisir entre 440hz et 432 hz ?

Although this may seem confusing to the casual observer, the choice of frequency is actually quite simple:

  • If you intend to use your handpan in a holistic or spiritual context (meditation, yoga, sonotherapy, etc.), opt for a handpan with a frequency of 432hz.

  • If you intend to use your handpan purely for musical purposes (concerts, creating melodies, covers, etc.), opt for a 440 Hz handpan.

In the vast majority of cases, you’ll therefore go for a 440 Hz handpan. The 432 Hz frequency will only be recommended when you intend to use your musical instrument in a very specific context of relaxation and meditation.

How do you learn to play the Handpan when you’re just starting out?

If you’re a beginner and want to learn to play the handpan, there are several options open to you.

To get you started, there are lots of tutorials on YouTube to help you master the instrument quickly and play your first melodies. The advantage of YouTube videos is that they are completely free and easy to access. So you can quickly get to grips with your new instrument without spending a penny.

If you want to go further, there are also a number of online and training courses where you can receive lessons and advice from an expert handpan musician. These courses often cost money, but allow you to explore all the possibilities offered by the handpan in more depth.

So start with YouTube tutorials to learn the basics, and when you’ve reached the end of your handpan learning curve you can then opt for online training.

How long does it take to learn to play?

The time it takes to learn to play the handpan will of course vary from one person to another, but in general you need no more than twenty hours of practice on your instrument to feel at ease with it and play beautiful melodies.

The handpan produces no wrong notes, making it a very accessible and easy-to-learn musical instrument. It won’t take you long to learn to play it properly and impress those around you. Becoming a handpan expert, on the other hand, will take many years.
